"Oh, the Weather Outside is Frightful..."

Hello All!

It's been a while since our last um...rather controversial post. Today I'd like to bring us out of the political arena and into a more fun topic...SNOW!

Yes, as you may have heard on the news, Kimchi and I have been here in the eye of biggest blizzard to hit DC in years.

To some of you this may be no big deal, but to me...it's pretty darn awesome.

I live in Southern California...I've never seen snow fall in my life! I've never gotten to play in snow, walk in it, eat it...nothing.

So this Saturday morning when I woke up and saw mountains of snow outside my dorm, I was pretty excited. But also a bit scared I must admit. I have no idea what to do in a snow storm!
Anyway, it was fun to walk around in the snow and throw snow balls.

Luckily, I was not one of those people who had to cancel flights because of inclement weather so i actually enjoyed this opportunity. Now, however, I am more ready to go home to gorgeous sunny California and wear shorts again...yes. SHORTS IN DECEMBER!

Which reminds me, I'm leaving for home on Monday (after my last final, wish me luck!)...on the train! I know, I know. That's an unnecessary amount of time. Really, it's only two days. Plus I get to travel across the country! So, I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes and maybe (hopefully) post some pics!

A gay mayor...in Texas?!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_houston_mayor

So, when I first saw this article on Yahoo today, I was like WHAT?! Houston elected a lesbian mayor?! This is in Texas!

Now, let me get this straight. I love Texas. Everyone knows this. BUT, no one can argue against the fact that Texas is a very traditional, Republican state. I mean, sure, Texas has its liberal hotspots, like Austin, but I'm sure that everyone agrees with me when I say that same-sex marriage will most likely not be legalized in Texas until the Supreme Court rules that it must.

Anyways, I personally believe that the LGBTQ movement is the civil rights movement of our generation, so I am sure that you can imagine what my reaction was. I quickly clicked on the article and just gobbled it up.

Here are the facts:
Annise Parker is Houston's newly elected mayor. Houston became the largest U.S. city to elect a openly gay mayor when it did so on December 12th.
There were two main candidates running on Saturday's run-off election: Parker and Locke, both Democrats. Parker edged out Locked with 53.6% of the vote.

Granted, the election only had 16.5% turnout. And neither campaign made Parker's sexual orientation the focus of their campaign, which is how it should be. I commend both candidates for doing so. (And I'm sure both candidates also did so for their own self-interest, but let's just give them some credit now.)

But still, good job Houston! Kudos to you!

Leave your comments below. I'd love to hear what you think about this election. :)

About Tacos!

Hey everyone!

My name is Jenni. I'm originally from Southern California (SoCal>NoCal) and I came here to DC to pursue a career in International Politics.

A little about me:

I'm really into music. I LOVE the Kings of Leon and am proud to say I knew them before "Sex on Fire" or "Use Somebody." (Sorry, I'm bit of a music snob.) I also love the Strokes (Julian Casablancas and I have the same birthday!), Interpol, The Kooks, Queen of the Stone Age, Bloc Party, and numerous other cool bands.

I love old movies. Casablanca and Gone with the Wind are my all-time favorites, but I'm also a sucker for a good romantic comedy like Bridget Jones' Diary or Love Actually... sometimes I even cry.

I know this pretty geeky, but I LOVE to read classics. I'm a huge fan of Jane Austen, Victor Hugo, the Bronte sisters...but my favorite book ever is Rebecca by Daphne Du Marier...you should read it and check out the movie too. It's another classic starring Sir Lawrence Olivier.

Lastly, I'm impulsive, loud, shy, smart, clueless, vulgar, stressed, excited and outgoing...

So now that I have shared all about myself, what about you?

XOXO Tacos

P.S. Kimchi's soon to come!

Blog Virgins!= Blirgins (?)

Hey Y'all (or for you Californians, Hey),

Welcome to our Blog! This Blog, appropriately titled "Tacos with Kimchi," is the brainchild of two fabulous, intelligent, supafly Georgetown students, Jenni Ortiz (Tacos) and Sooji Kim(chi).

Hey! That's us!

Yes, Sooji. That is us. Anyway, we created this blog to discuss all sorts of issues.

Yup! For example, the first topic will be.... (Drumroll please) Texas v. California!!

Actually Sooji, I think it should be titled California v. Texas. We all know who the winner is here..the best in the West...CALIFORNIA!

Ha! You are a funny one. Hearing that makes me chuckle... in embarrassment. Obviously, TEXAS is numero uno. :)

Don't whip out the Spanish on me, chica. We have just as many Hispanics in California (jk we have more) than you do in Tejas.

Well, this debate could go on literally forever, so we want your input! DING! The great TEXAS v. california debate begins!

Um...the great CALIFORNIA (Golden State, place of miracles, promised land) v. texas (place of.........) begins. You guys choose either one, but we want evidence to back it up. No "It's great because that's where I live" comments allowed. Be Creative!

Yeehaw! Let's go!

XOXO
